Dog Vaccinations
Dog vaccinations are critical to protecting your canine companion from a variety of contagious diseases that can spread quickly among unvaccinated pets. At Sky Lake Animal Hospital, we recommend a combination of core vaccines, which are essential for every dog, and noncore vaccines based on lifestyle and exposure risks.
Core dog vaccines include:
- Rabies, which protects against the fatal rabies virus that also poses a deadly risk to people.
- Canine distemper, which prevents a severe and often fatal viral disease that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems.
- Parvovirus (parvo), which protects against a highly contagious and life-threatening gastrointestinal virus.
- Adenovirus, which cross-protects against two adenovirus strains that can lead to respiratory infections and liver damage.
Noncore dog vaccines may include:
- Bordetella (kennel cough), which is recommended for social dogs who attend grooming, daycare, or boarding.
- Leptospirosis, which protects against a bacterial infection that can spread to people.
- Lyme disease, which is recommended for dogs at risk of tick exposure.
Cat Vaccinations
Cat vaccinations are just as vital for feline health. Even indoor cats are at risk of exposure to viruses through contact with other pets, parasites, or even the air through open windows.
Core cat vaccines include:
- Rabies, which is legally required and essential for protecting both cats and their families.
- FVRCP (feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia), which protects against three dangerous and highly contagious feline diseases that can cause respiratory infections, oral ulcers, and severe gastrointestinal illness.
Noncore cat vaccines may include:
- Feline leukemia virus (FeLV), which is recommended for kittens and adult cats who go outdoors or live with other cats.
Puppy & Kitten Vaccinations
Puppy shots are given in a carefully spaced series during your dog’s first several months of life to build strong immunity for a lifetime of wellness. Our veterinarians will also guide you on booster schedules to keep your dog fully protected.
Kitten shots begin around six to eight weeks of age, with booster doses scheduled to ensure proper immunity. Our veterinarians will recommend a customized plan to provide lifelong protection while minimizing the risk of adverse reactions.
